The BART rail system provides access to much of the Bay Area, including Berkeley and Oakland. Taxis are also available. Plentiful alternative transportation makes renting a car unnecessary, and parking in the city is generally scarce and expensive. For travel to outlying areas guests can rent a car for the day.

    SERVICES
What to expect: Guests entering this 15-story Union Square landmark pass framed photos of the building's construction, circa 1914. It's been family owned ever since. The lobby retains its period style, with a 20-foot ceiling, Oriental rug, granite-topped registration desk, and a bar, where the mirror is emblazoned with the image of a propeller plane. The hotel is a favorite of vacationers, who like the shopper's paradise of Union Square just outside the door.

Amenity highlights: In addition to a restaurant with breakfast and lunch service, there's a public bar just off the lobby. The entire hotel is nonsmoking, something of a rarity even in health-conscious San Francisco. Guests have complimentary use of the Westin St. Francis Health Club, across the street. A dedicated tour window in the lobby provides tips for travelers.

Insider tip: The enormous mural that reads "Chancellor" down the hotel's outside wall has been there since it opened in 1914. The hotel was built in expectation of the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and the 400th anniversary of Balboa's exploration of the Pacific Ocean.

This boutique hotel has been in the same family for four generations. It was built in 1914 for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, and, at 15 stories, was the tallest building in the city at that time. European styling throughout is augmented with photos and artwork of the exposition and the clipper ships of the mid-1800s. Complimentary freshly baked cookies, apples, and gourmet coffee are available in the lobby. Location is a high point: The hotel is on the Powell Street cable car line and steps from the stores and restaurants of Union Square. Major theaters are within 3 blocks.

A computer with high-speed Internet access is available for guest use. Guests also have complimentary access to the St. Francis Health Club across the street.

Airport transportation is available for an additional fee.
