Amenity highlights: Although built in the 1960s (and renovated in 2000), the six-floor redbrick hotel blends harmoniously with the 18th- and 19th-century townhouses that surround it. Gleaming brass chandeliers and reproduction antiques accent the small, Federal-style lobby, which itself has a townhouse feel. The lobby is the setting for the complimentary Continental breakfast.

Insider tip: A half-block from the hotel, the garden adjoining the Old Stone House provides a calming retreat from the M Street hubbub. It's a lovely setting for a picnic (perhaps with goodies from the nearby Dean & DeLuca gourmet grocer). The house itself, built in 1765, is the oldest in the city that is still in its original location; it's open to visitors several days a week.
