Just 1 1/2 miles from Lihue Airport on Kauai's east coast, this resort drops down a hillside to a broad crescent beach on Kalapaki Bay and is adjacent to two golf courses and a world-class tennis center.

Spacious guestrooms provide air conditioning and an island-style ambience, and include dining tables with four chairs. Each room offers either a step-out lanai (patio or balcony) or a Juliet balcony with views.

One of Hawaii's largest swimming pools—a luxurious affair with a garden island and ocean views, an enormous sundeck, and five hot tubs—affords an alternative to the spacious beach and its calm waters.

Driving directions from Lihue Airport: Turn right onto Mokulele Loop. Turn left onto Ahukini Road. Turn left onto Kapule Highway. Turn left onto Rice Street. Continue approximately one quarter-mile, and the hotel entrance is on the left.

Kukui's Restaurant & Bar - Located near the pool, this open-air restaurant with pale green, pineapple-shaped columns serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There's Hawaiian music nightly, a prime rib/seafood buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a Sunday champagne brunch.

Kukui's Oceanfront Terrace - The casual atmosphere and light menu of appetizers, salads, pizzas, and sandwiches make this a popular spot for lunch and dinner.

What to expect: Complimentary shuttle service delivers a steady stream of international guests from nearby Lihue Airport through a tree-shaded avenue leading to the resort's upper entrance. New arrivals descend two stories by steep escalator to a grand esplanade and enormous tropical garden containing waterfalls and koi ponds. Relaxation begins to take hold in the airy lobby ringed by pink-marble columns. By the time they get a glimpse of the pool, the beach, and the placid bay with its rugged mountain backdrop, guests have left the hurly-burly world and entered a Hawaiian paradise.

Amenity highlights: The pool's dimensions impress: 210 feet in diameter, 26,000 square feet, 300,000 gallons of water, 1.2 million tiles. But even they don't fully describe the layout's grandeur. Seen from the Aupaka Terrace above, the round pool with its scalloped edge is a marvel: pink-marble waterfalls, six-pointed sundeck-island, sculpted-animal fountains spraying jets of sparkling water, and a palm-shaded sundeck—including a children's pool—spreading out to restaurants, lounges, and a broad sunning lawn bordering the beach. Five grand, wood-columned gazebos rise two stories from the pool to the Aupaka Terrace. Their top levels each contain a single black-marble table offering great views. Their bottom levels each contain a large hot tub next to the pool.

Insider tip: At the terrace level, the gazebos above the pool can be reserved for private dinners.

This 356-room resort includes a full-service health-and-massage spa, smart shops, a florist, and a children's activity program for ages 5–12. Various adult activities are presented daily, including lei-making, hula and scuba diving lessons, water aerobics, yoga, exercise classes, and cooking demonstrations. Entertainment in the ballroom features comedy and musical acts. The concierge desk arranges helicopter sightseeing flights, luaus, golf times, and all other activities available throughout the island.
