    SERVICES
What to expect: Opened in 1924 as an elite residential club, the Allerton Hotel’s construction coincided with Michigan Avenue’s rise to prominence as Chicago’s Champs-Elysées. The hotel retains the neon sign advertising its famous Tip Top Tap lounge, a nationally renowned big-band venue in the 1940s. The Allerton re-opened in 1999 after a multimillion-dollar renovation that restored the decorative brickwork and carved stone detailing of its Italian Renaissance exterior and the residential feel of its interior.

Shoppers and sightseers are drawn to the hotel’s prime "Magnificent Mile" (North Michigan Avenue) address and proximity to the lake. The cushy furniture in the Allerton’s sunlit third-floor lobby, decorated with Picasso prints, plants, and large windows, is a great place to relax or plan excursions.

Amenity highlights: Exercisers can look out on Michigan Avenue and the twinkling city lights from the 25th-floor fitness center, which features cardio equipment, weight machines, and a Finnish wood sauna.

Insider tip: The famed Pizzeria Uno—four blocks from the hotel—has been satisfying cravings for traditional deep-dish Chicago pies since 1943.

The 2,000-square-foot fitness center on the 25th floor features views of the Chicago skyline. It offers strength-training equipment, treadmills, and steppers as well as stationary, recumbent, and virtual-reality bicycles. A Finnish wood sauna is adjacent.

The hotel’s extensive meeting facilities include the 23rd-floor Renaissance Ballroom, with 25-foot ceilings and many 1920s architectural features. The 15-foot windows offer views of the city and Lake Michigan.

    Valet parking:
    $26-35 per night. In/out privileges. Underground/covered/secured parking.
