    DINING
Trader Vic’s - Claiming to have invented the famous Mai Tai cocktail, this chain of restaurants (the first was in San Francisco) offers Polynesian cuisine prepared in ancient Chinese ovens within view of diners. South Seas specialties include curry dishes, Mongolian beef, and crab rangoon. This Trader Vic's is a popular spot for hotel guests and theatergoers. It is open for dinner Mondays through Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

Big Downtown - Designed in the spirit of Chicago’s 1940s heyday, this sophisticated but fun restaurant serves steaks, pastas, pizza, and sandwiches, adjacent to the elevated train tracks outside; a model train runs overhead inside the restaurant. A section of booths emulates fancy dining cars, complete with old-fashioned suitcases stored on racks above the seats. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner.

French Quarter - This lobby restaurant with a New Orleans motif is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Specialties include steaks, chops, barbecued ribs, and prime rib. During breakfast and lunch hours, diners may also choose a buffet.

    SERVICES
What to expect: A formal staircase provides an exit from traffic and an entrance into a lobby gilded with gold, where soothing classical music provides an aural backdrop as guests sit in comfortable couches, reading or working quietly beneath the vast ceiling-mural painted with figures from Greek mythology. The hotel’s convenient location along State Street and within the Loop attracts both business travelers and vacationers.

Amenity highlights: Among the oldest continuously running hotels in the country, this hotel has added modern touches in both safety and technology. One entire floor is a conference center, with 40,000 square feet of meeting space and business services. The hotel’s 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art health club features personal trainers, an indoor pool, a steam room, and a sauna. Even the famous Empire ballroom with its gold leaf, mirrored walls, and crystal chandeliers has audio-visual capabilities.

Insider tip: Guests traveling with children should allow for some play time near the hotel’s French Quarter restaurant. Mini-benches are set up along one side of the entrance for viewing children’s programs, and artist easels and magnet boards are set up on the other side.

This 25-story grand hotel has a full-service business center and a variety of adaptable ballroom, meeting, and exhibition spaces. A fully equipped health club includes a pool, sauna, and spa ($9 fee per visit). Several clothing and gift boutiques, and a hair salon, are available on the lower level.
