    Getting there: Express shuttle buses ($5–15) are available from all three airports. They make only scheduled stops, but one of their stops is Penn Station, across the street from the hotel. Taxis are also available ($26–35 from LaGuardia; more than $36 from JFK and Newark). (All fees subject to change without notice.)

    Getting around: The best way to reach shops and attractions in the immediate area is on foot. For other destinations, the subway is a good choice (less than $5; fees subject to change without notice), espcially during peak traffic. Taxis are another good option. Rental cars are not recommended.

    What to expect: Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a grand hotel in 1919, the Pennsylvania today offers well-priced rooms and a prime location. The handsome lobby hums with convention-goers, those with business in the nearby Garment District, musicians playing concerts at Madison Square Garden, and their fans. Train and subway connections are easily accessible across the street at Penn Station.

    Amenity highlights: Rooms are basic but comfortable, varying in decor, but all offering multi-line phones, irons, and hair dryers. Front rooms have fine views of Madison Square Garden and the Hudson River beyond. Guests have their own fitness center as well as privileges at a neighborhood health club. Refrigerators are available on request.

    Insider tip: In the Big Band era, the hotel's Café Rouge ballroom played host to the bands of the Dorsey Bothers, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. The Glen Miller Orchestra immortalized the hotel with a swing classic dedicated to the telephone number, "Pennsylvania 6-5000." More recently, the hotel's ballrooms have been used as studios by TV personalities such as Maury Povich and Sally Jessy Raphael.
