    ROOMS
This 17-story hotel has 369 guestrooms with views of the neighborhood and beyond. Dressed in a palette of grays and coffee tones, the rooms feature decor inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement. Beds with chocolate-colored leather headboards are covered with Italian Frette linens, silk spreads, and cozy fleece throws. End tables topped with marble mosaic mimic potter's stands, while large desks are modeled after drafting tables. Minibars resemble antique campaign chests. In-room entertainment centers feature a TV, videocassette player, CD player, and library of CDs, including those of artists who have stayed in the hotel. Walls display a rotating collection of black-and-white photos (available for purchase). Rooms also include high-speed Internet access (fee) and choice of complimentary New York Times, London Times, USA Today, or Wall Street Journal.

Bathrooms recall Old New York with subway-style ceramic wall tiles, grey and white hexagonal floor tiles, pedestal sinks, and face cloths tucked into old-fashioned shaving mugs. Dual lights, made of hand-blown glass bell jars, serve as a reminder of the era when electricity was starting to replace gas and wary consumers continued to use both. Bath products are by Blisslabs and Privé.

    DINING
Dining is available in the Gallery and in the Grand Bar & Lounge. The venues share the same selection of New American Classics, with an emphasis on New England fare. "Cocktail tiers" provide a choice of three items served on tiers and designed for sharing. Small plates and full dinners are also available. Highlights include Maple Barbecued Quail, Yukon Gold Potato Dumplings, Steamed Lobster with Cornbread, and Baked Brie Stuffed with Truffles. Dessert choices include Lemon Baked Alaska and the hotel's creative take on S'mores: chocolate-dipped homemade graham crackers with brûléed meringue. Teas, cocktails, wines, ports, cognacs, and single-malt scotches are also served.

The Gallery - This high-ceilinged dining room displays a rotating art collection. Antique mirrors accent saffron walls. Seating at traditional tables and on velvet couches. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, plus Sunday brunch. Outdoor dining is available during the warmer months.

Grand Bar & Lounge - Stylish, alluring room with tall windows, copper-topped tables, and amber lighting. Apothecary jars stand on shelves behind the bar, and a 19th-century operating-room lamp hangs overhead. The adjacent lounge features oversized sofas, a wall of 16-foot-high windows, and hand-painted tables with legs shaped like elephant tusks. DJs entertain most nights.

    SERVICES
What to expect: The hotel draws its inspiration from SoHo itself, where 19th-century industrial buildings with ornate cast-iron facades are now home to galleries, theaters, restaurants, and shops. The Old New York atmosphere begins with the two-level lobby anchored by massive, red-brick sculpted columns. Linking the entry level to the second level is a grand staircase suspended by cables and paved with bottle glass. (Bottle-glass disks were used in the early 1900s to light dwellings below street level and can still be seen around SoHo today.) The hotel is favored by the fashion and entertainment industry, with a guest roster that includes Kevin Spacey, Spike Lee, k.d. lang, and Naomi Campbell.

Amenity highlights: Adjoining the lobby on the second level, the lounge offers a dramatic setting for people-watching, intimate tête-à-têtes, or viewing the streetscape below. Sixteen-foot-high windows are softened with muslin sheers and 900-pound velvet curtains. The ceiling is fashioned of handmade mercury mirror glass embedded with chicken wire. Seating areas feature oversized sofas, tall palms, and hand-painted tables with legs shaped like elephant tusks. Upholstery spans the centuries with a mix of 1800s William Morris patterns and modern textiles.

Insider tip: Right outside the West Broadway entrance stands a 17th-century French stone basin, used these days as a "dog bar." It's a favored watering hole for pooches from the neighborhood and from the hotel to meet, greet, and quench their thirst.

Opened in 1996, this hotel blends the opulence of gas-lit New York with the artistic sensibility of today's SoHo neighborhood. Galleries, shops, and historic cast-iron buildings are within a block or two. Commissioned works by SoHo artists are displayed throughout the hotel's public spaces and guestrooms. Guests can dine in the opulent Grand Bar & Lounge or in the art-adorned Gallery restaurant.

Pets are not only permitted at the Soho Grand, they are embraced. Pet pampering is taken to an entirely new level with perks such as in-room dining, toys, full-body pillows, grooming brushes, and even doggie toothbrushes and toothpaste. The hotel works with carefully selected animal-care providers for services including dog walking and pet sitting. Guests can also borrow an ebony or orange goldfish for companionship—and, if desired, can take their new pal home in a plastic carrier.
